One of the largest and most beautiful architectural works of Porto Alegre, Otávio Rocha Viaduct, impresses whomever sees it from any angle, by the arch’s joint, by the columns’ height or even by its large and famous stairways.
The gap, also called central porch, levelled by Duque de Caxias Street, measures 19,20m tall. Inaugurated in 1932, it was the city’s first concrete made viaduct. It took four years to be done. Today, 85 years after the first brick was laid, it needs reconstruction. Nevertheless, it is still a postcard and an obligatory sight. Under its arches and stairways it shelters vinyl stores, pubs and second-hand bookstores.
